The FRIDAY THE 13TH series

FRIDAY THE 13TH

German Title:
Freitag der 13.

USA, 1980
Director: Sean S. Cunningham

6/10

It will be always a mystery to me how this mediocre slasher could turn out into one of horror's most successful franchises. Don't get me wrong: it's a decent movie with some awesome kills (especially the brutal kill of young Kevin Bacon), some supenseful scenes and a great ending - but there are also some unbelievably annoying actors, pointless scenes, dumb dialogue and... well, let's face it: the story is pretty dull.
Similar movies like Sleepaway Camp or The Burning are way better.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2

German Title:
Freitag der 13. - Jason kehrt zurück / Freitag der 13. Teil 2

USA, 1981
Director: Steve Miner

7/10

A surprisingly good sequel, better than Part 1. Jason Voorhees makes his killing debut and he succeeds brilliantly in chopping up teens (see what I mean?). I also like Jason's sack over his head (not as good as the icehockey-mask but it has that certain something).
The whole movie is creepier, faster and more tense, and the ending is fantastic - but of course there are also a bunch of annoying actors, plot holes and stupid dialogues.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3

Alternate Title:
Friday The 13th Part 3-D

German Title:
Und wieder ist Freitag der 13.

USA, 1982
Director: Steve Miner

8/10

IMO this is undoubtedly the best of all Friday-movies, of course not only because of Jason finally getting his trademark hockey-mask: it's surprisingly pretty suspenseful and atmospheric, in some scenes very fast-paced, there's plenty of gore and great kills, and some of the actors are comparatively good.

FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER

German Title:
Freitag der 13. Teil IV - Das letzte Kapitel

USA, 1984
Director: Joseph Zito

5/10

An ok sequel but not really anything special. Some tense and pretty atmospheric scenes, Jason looks amazing and his kills are once again awesome - but you quickly realize that it's the same story now told for the 4th time, and the characters never have been as dumb and annoying as in here. A bit of a letdown.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING

Alternate Title:
Friday The 13th: A New Beginning

German Title:
Freitag der 13. Teil V - Ein neuer Anfang

USA, 1985
Director: Danny Steinmann

2/10

Terrible sequel. Every single character is annoying as hell. There's no suspense, no tension, it's full of boredom and the ending is shit. Some great gore but that's it.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES

Alternate Title:
Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part VI

German Title:
Freitag der 13. Teil VI - Jason lebt

USA, 1986
Director: Tom McLoughlin

6/10

A real treat after the awful Part 5. Totally unscary and unoriginal, but nevertheless very entertaining. The whole film is extremely funny and humorously, but also pretty brutal and gore. The plot is mad and majority of the cast consists of hilariously overacting characters.
A perfect popcorn flick.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD

German Title:
Freitag der 13. Teil VII - Jason im Blutrausch

USA, 1988
Director: John Carl Buechler

6/10

The last sequel that I'd call better than average, especially because of the plot that may be a bit strange but at least offers something new and original. It's very brutal and gory, some of the deaths are really brilliant, there's plenty of atmosphere and the acting is ok. By the way, this is Kane Hodder's first performance as Jason and I daresay that this is definitely the best Jason of all Friday-films.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN

German Title:
Freitag der 13. Teil VIII - Todesfalle Manhattan

USA, 1989
Director: Rob Hedden

3/10

Part 8 is just lame. The script/plot is terrible, the actors are bad and the title is completely misleading: Jason is in New York for about 15 minutes. The kills are all brilliant and the end is great, but overall... well, just lame.

JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY

Alternate Title:
Jason Goes To Hell

German Title:
Jason Goes To Hell - Die Endabrechnung

USA, 1993
Director: Adam Marcus

1/10

I really don't know what they were thinking when they made this steaming pile of shit. Part 5 is a masterpiece compared to this crap.

JASON X

USA, 2002
Director: James Isaac

5/10

Jason goes to space - yep, it sounds silly and stupid and in fact it is silly and stupid, but it's so entertaining to see Jason slashing around on a starship and it is even more entertaining to see him transforming into Uber Jason.
Turn off your brain, grab yourself a bottle of beer and a pack of popcorn, lean back and enjoy this fabulous cheesefest!

FREDDY VS. JASON

USA, 2003
Director: Ronny Yu

7/10

Pretty enjoyable clash of the titans. Plot is shit and most of the actors are average but seriously: when Jason meets Freddy, who cares about such trifles?
It's a fabulous gorefest, not very tense, but extremely gory and entertaining - again a perfect popcorn flick!

FRIDAY THE 13TH
(Reboot)

German Title:
Freitag der 13.

USA, 2009
Director: Marcus Nispel

4/10

A very disappointing reboot. The first 20 minutes are alright, Jason looks great and he kills are all pretty solid. For the rest, it's plain shit. A terrible plot, some extremely annoying characters played by some lame actors, horrible dialogue, no tension, no suspense, no nothing. Meh.

  1. I want to say growing up in the eighties I loved this series. Parts 1,2 & 3 had some orginality to them to kept me interested in the franchise. After that, I can't say I enjoyed it anymore. I have the first 3 on DVD, and I can STILL enjoy them over and over. To me part 2 was the scariest. And loved the final girl, and Jason's burlap sack. Part 3 had the best characters, and kills.

  2. Well, if you rate the 1st friday movie only 6/10, then propably the slasher genre is not your cup of tea. And dont tell me that sleepaway camp is way better, you must be jokin'. cheers ajs.
