SLITHER

SLITHER

USA, 2006
Director: James Gunn

7/10

You like the 80s? You enjoy watching movies like "Slugs" or "Night Of The Creeps"? Then this is your movie, a highly enjoyable and extremely 80s-like fun-horror with nice characters, funny dialogue, great atmosphere and extremely well-made and impressive special effects. No masterpiece but it definitely will keep you perfectly entertained for one and a half hours.

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT

Alternate Title:
Grim Company / Krug & Company

German Title:
Das letzte Haus links / Mondo Brutale

USA, 1972
Director: Wes Craven

8/10

Wes Craven's directorial debut, an extremely disturbing and brutal revenge/exploitation classic with a quite good cast (especially David Hess), a lot of tension and atmosphere, and some terrifyingly violent yet very effective rape and torture scenes. A movie definitely not for the squeamish.

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT
(Remake)

USA, 2009
Director: Dennis Illiadis

5/10

Mediocre and disappointing remake. Great actors, brilliant cinematography, wonderful atmosphere and some solid gore - yet, the movie is way too slow, way too tedious and way too unspectacular.

Horribly boring and almost unwatchable indie-horror-dreck with awful acting and terrible camera work. Avoid this piece of crap.

One of the most impressive, original and intelligent epidemic/zombie-flicks ever made. Amazing plot, amazing script, amazing actors, amazing concept, amazing suspense - damn, really everything's amazing about it. I fuckin' love this movie!

CAT'S EYE

CAT'S EYE

German Title:
Katzenauge

USA, 1985
Director: Lewis Teague

8/10

Brilliant anthology movie with 3 wonderful stories about (1) a brutal non-smoking agency, (2) a lethal bet involving a walk around a tall building (both adapted from 2 magnificent Stephen King short stories) and (3) an evil troll, plus a wrap-around story about a life-saving cat.
Segment 3 is a bit weak but the first 2 segments are absolutely fantastic and highly entertaining, very tense and thrilling, with a nice score, a pretty neat cast (James Woods, Drew Barrymore...) and loads of funny Stephen King references. Fabulous popcorn flick!

The IT'S ALIVE series

IT'S ALIVE

German Title:
Die Wiege des Bösen

USA, 1974
Director: Larry Cohen

7/10

Weird and quite silly but highly entertaining killer-baby flick, pretty tense and suspenseful, perfectly paced and very atmospheric with a good cast, a brilliant score (from the godlike Bernard Herrmann), fine cinematography and a gorgeous-looking little brat. Fun!

IT LIVES AGAIN

Alternate Title:
It's Alive 2 / It's Alive 2: It Lives Again

German Title:
Die Wiege des Satans

USA, 1978
Director: Larry Cohen

3/10

Silly, unnecessary and disappoinitng sequel. Starts out quite interesting but gets boring and dull pretty fast. The monster babies (there are 3 of them in here) look pretty nice and there are also 2-3 suspenseful scenes. As for the rest it's filled with unlikable characters, annoying dialogue and boring scenes. Even the cinematography and the score are below average.

IT'S ALIVE III: ISLAND OF THE ALIVE

Alternate Title:
Island Of The Alive

German Title:
Die Wiege des Schreckens

USA, 1987
Director: Larry Cohen

5/10

Surprisingly way more entertaining than I expected! Part 3 is actually funnier and more fast-paced, with plenty of gore, quite amusing characters, highly amusing dialogue and a bunch of hilariously cheesy baby mutations (this time Cohen gives us 5 of these brats). Sadly many of the effects look extremely cheap and in terms of atmosphere or suspense it's no match for the original, nevertheless it's a humorous piece of trash that perfectly kills time.

IT'S ALIVE
(Remake)

USA, 2008
Director: Josef Rusnak

2/10

Lousy remake with terrible acting, poor CGI effects, an awful new plot and nearly no tension. At least there are some decent gore scenes.

Argento's second movie is not as good as his first one but still a brilliant one with a pretty interesting story, a huge amount of suspense and visually stunning scenes, a wonderful score and a gorgeous cast.

Super-entertaining and highly amusing horror-fun, pretty tense and atmospheric with wonderful settings, a couple of decent actors (even Paris Hilton!), a bunch of terrific kills and a fabulous finale.

Orphan - Das Waisenkind

USA, 2009
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra

9,5/10

Definitely one of the greatest killer-child flicks ever made. An interesting plot, well-scripted and well-paced, extremely suspenseful and thrilling with some outstanding acting (Esther's and the deaf child's appearances are mindblowing), brilliant kills, brilliant atmosphere, great dialogue and a couple of terrific jump-scares and edge-of-seat-scenes.
"Orphan" is a really BIG surprise; haven't expected it to be that great. We need more movies like this one!

TRICK 'R TREAT

TRICK 'R TREAT

Fabulous and highly original Halloween-themed anthology-flick, very 80s-like, creepy and highly atmospheric. The movie is brilliantly paced and never gets boring, it's full of superb actors, terrific effects, amusing dialogue, cool-looking settings, nice shocks and great kills. One of the most entertaining horror movies I've seen in a long time!

Not his best work (mainly because of a quite weird story) but still a pretty great Argento-production full of highly suspenseful moments, fantastic camera work, terrific kills and a really entertaining cast (Bud Spencer!), plus: a wonderful score from grandmaster Morricone.

Director: Fabrice Du Welz

Not as great as Du Welz' previous movie (mainly because it's often too slow) but still an impressive and touching surrealism-film, visually extremely stunning (fantastic images, brilliant lighting, excellent camera work), with some very believable acting, a highly interesting plot and a dark and disturbing atmosphere.

THE WICKER MAN (Original & Remake)

THE WICKER MAN

Alternate Title:
The Wickerman

UK, 1973
Director: Robin Hardy

9/10

A highly disturbing but absolutely brilliant and unique cult classic. Never seen anything like this before. Amazing cast (with a tremendous Christopher Lee), great plot, haunting atmosphere, fantastic cinematography. I especially enjoyed the folk-music scenes and nude dances - so beautiful but also so irritating. A must-see!

THE WICKER MAN
(US Remake)

German Title:
The Wicker Man - Ritual des Bösen

USA / Canada / Germany, 2006
Director: Neil LaBute

1/10

One of the worst remakes ever made. Seriously: this is so unbelievably bad, stupid and annoying, it's incredible. Watch
this and you know what I mean. Nicolas Cage and Neil LaBute should get burned for this rubbish.

REST STOP

REST STOP

Alternate Title:
Rest Stop: Dead Ahead

USA, 2006
Director: John Shiban

6/10

A nice little survival-flick, nothing special, nothing to get excited about but at least it's an entertaining time-killer.
Pros: a highly suspenseful and atmospheric first half, pretty good acting, a nice soundtrack, a bunch of freaky characters and some great gore.
Cons: The plot is horribly stupid, extremely illogical and full of large holes, the second half is a bit boring, the ending is disappointing.

REST STOP: DON'T LOOK BACK

Alternate Title:
Rest Stop 2

USA, 2008
Director: Shawn Papazian

3/10

A lousy and unnecessary sequel. The first 20 minutes or so are pretty good, the acting is ok and there are also some ok kills. Everything else just sucks: the plot is even more horrible than in Part 1, it's boring, completely unoriginal, annoyingly predictable and extremely unsuspenseful. Lame.

DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW

DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW

German Title:
Die Nacht der Vogelscheuche / Die Rache des Gelynchten / Nacht für Nacht / Scarecrow - Ein Toter schlägt zurück

USA, 1981
Director: Frank De Felitta

8/10

Next to "Scarecrows", this is my favorite killer-scarecrow flick and also undoubtedly one of the best made-fot-TV horror movies of all time. Unbelievably creepy, suspenseful and atmospheric, with a couple of superb actors (most notably Larry Drake), fantastic cinematography, terrific-looking settings and super-eerie soundtrack.
Great film!

DISMAL

DISMAL

Alternate Titles:
Dismal - Eat Or Be Eaten / Bleed - Eat Or Be Eaten / Bleed

USA, 2009
Director: Gary King

1/10

Undoubtedly one of the worst and most boring horror movies ever made. The plot is lame, the acting is horrid, the dialogue is simply annoying and the CGI effects look like they were made in 1990. A horrible, avoidable and forgettable movie.

WILDERNESS

WILDERNESS

UK/Ireland, 2006
Director: Michael J. Bassett

6/10

Pretty decent but IMO highly overrated survival flick. Briliant gore, amazing settings and a bunch of quite good actors - sadly it's got a crappy and disappointing plot and there's just not enough suspense or tension, especially in the second half.

THE ABANDONED

THE ABANDONED

German Title:
The Abandoned - Die Verlassenen

Spain / UK / Bulgaria, 2006
Director: Nacho Cerdà

7/10

"The Abandoned" is a unique and quite impressive Spanish supernatural horror flick with a bizarre and complex, but highly interesting plot that reminded me a bit of Christopher Smith's "Triangle".

It's suspenseful, highly atmopsheric and incredibly creepy due to the use of some outstandingly creepy settings (abandoned houses, dark cellars, foggy forests), stunning cinematography, a haunting score, many breathtakingly scary scenes and a few cool jump scares.
The acting is very good (Anastasia Hille, Valentin Ganev) and the characters are quite intriguing.

There are a few tedious scenes and the end is not fully satisfying, but aside from that, it's a cool little spine-chiller and definitely one of the better After Dark films.
