KILLER CROCODILE 1 & 2

KILLER CROCODILE

Alternate Title:
Murder Alligator

Alternate German Titles:
Der Mörder Alligator / Der Alligator / Killer Krokodil

Italy, 1989
Director: Fabrizio De Angelis

3/10

A supercheap and supercheesy Italo-croc-schlock, full of hilariously bad but highly enjoyable croc attack scenes and fun kills. The acting is of course lame, most of the dialogue is just horrid, the plot is dumb and the soundtrack is an impertinent rip-off of the Jaws-soundtrack, at least it's an entertaining time-killer.

KILLER CROCODILE 2

Alternate German Titles:
Killer Crocodile 2 - Die Mörderbestie / Killer Krokodil 2 - Die Mörderbestie / Killer Krokodil II / Killer Crocodile 2 - Die Mörderbestie beißt wieder zu

Italy, 1990
Director: Giannetto De Rossi

3/10

Just about as 'good' as Part 1: the croc- and kill-scenes are all pretty fun, everything else (acting, dialogue, plot, soundtrack) is just crap.

SHEITAN

SHEITAN

Alternate Title:
Satan

France, 2008
Director: Kim Chapiron

2/10

French horror movies, I love them all - except this one. I don't care about bible references or crazy characters as longs as it's a good movie - but "Sheitan" is just terrible.
The first 60 minutes are just boring, no action, no tension, nothing. Just plain boring.
The remaining 30 minutes... well, nothing special. A hilarious Vincent Cassel goes bananas, some insects in a bed, a fat woman has a baby, some idiot dreams some shit - but that's it. Just a couple of scenes which are ok but in no way impressive or entertaining
An extremely disappointing movie. Avoid it!

The RE-ANIMATOR series

RE-ANIMATOR

Alternate German Titles:
Re-Animator - Der Tod ist erst der Anfang / Der Re-Animator

USA, 1985
Director: Stuart Gordon

8,5/10

Hell yeah, "Re-Animator": Stuart Gordon's horror debut, a rad adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story

"Herbert West - Reanimator" and definitely one of the most entertaining and most insane horror-comedy flicks from the 80s. Extremely funny and highly amusing, but also pretty tense and thrilling. Filled with loads of glorious gore, great-looking zombie creatures and terrific special effects. The acting is mostly brilliant (especially Jeffrey Combs and David Gale), the black-humored dialogue are ingenious and the Psycho-like soundtrack is remarkable.
An awesome modern horror classic - don't miss this one!

BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR

Alternate Title:
Re-Animator 2

USA, 1991
Director: Brian Yuzna

7/10

Not as amazing and/or groundbreaking as the original, but still an absolutely enjoyable sequel. At times a bit too tedious and dull, but mostly as amusing and creepy as in the first part. Again, the acting is just great, the soundtrack is stunning, it's filled with outrageously bizarre and terrific-looking zombies-creatures, lots of gore, lots of atmosphere.

If you love Part 1, you sure will love Part 2 too.

BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR

Alternate Title:
Re-Animator 3

Spain, 2003
Director: Brian Yuzna

6/10

A good but sadly disappointing sequel. For whatever reason Yuzna turned the insanity a bit down - a bad decision: compared to its predecessors it's way too tame, tedious and uninspired. The gore and zombie action is nice but nothing compared to what Gordon and Yuzna have done before.
At least, it never gets boring, the acting is awesome again (a fantastic Elsa Pataky, Jeffrey Combs excellent as always...), there are many hilarious dialogue, the opening scene is outstanding and the soundtrack is often so incredibly barnstorming, it's stunning.

THE GREEN MILE

THE GREEN MILE

USA, 1999
Director: Frank Darabont

8/10

Impressive adaptation of Stephen King's mediocre serial novel, very thrilling and tense, but also very dramatic and touching with an absolutely ace cast (Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan...), brilliant-looking death-row settings, beautiful cinematography, wonderful lighting and some really brutal executions. Terrific!

PREMONITION

PREMONITION

German Title:
Die Vorahnung

USA, 2007
Director: Mennan Yapo

2/10

Very disappointing mystery/timeslip-crap, boring, confusing and bad. Could have been good if there would have been a halfway logical script written by someone with a spark of intelligence.

GIALLO

GIALLO

Italy, 2009
Director: Dario Argento

4/10

Undoubtedly Argento's weakest film to date. The first half hour is just great: pretty tense and very 70s-looking - but then it goes downhill. No suspense, no tension, a terrible cast (especially Adrien Brody who acts as if he's on drugs) and some horrible dialogue. The plot is weak and the kills are surprisingly poor.
Dario, please retire.

GRACE

GRACE

USA, 2009
Director: Paul Solet

7/10

Highly interesting and quite disturbing "different" horror movie with a splendid plot, very good acting and some magnificent camera work. A bit boring and tedious towards the end, but overall pretty great and refreshing.

The BUTTERFLY EFFECT series

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

German Title:
Butterfly Effect

USA, 2004
Director: Eric Bress & J. Mackye Gruber

9/10

A brilliant what-the-fuck?-movie, highly entertaining and thrilling, but also suspenseful, thought-provoking and a bit disturbing with an amazing plot, a fantastic script, a wonderful score, brilliant camera work and a surprisingly good cast (Ashton Kutcher is outstanding compared to his previous roles). A great modern classic!

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2

German Title:
Butterfly Effect 2

USA, 2006
Director: John R. Leonetti

2/10

Horribly boring and unimpressive sequel with a stupid story, lame actors, awfully bad special effects, no tension, no atmosphere and some unimpressive camera work. 2-3 ok scenes, that's it. Avoid this piece of junk.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 3: REVELATIONS

German Title:
Butterfly Effect 3 - Die Offenbarung

USA, 2009
Director: Seth Grossman

8/10

A really big surprise! Part 3 is IMO nearly as good as Part 1. Very tense, suspenseful and atmospheric with a strong and intelligent plot, a terrific script full of great twists, decent actors, good dialogue and an amazing ending.
For those of you who haven't seen the sequels yet: avoid #2 but don't miss #3!

The CRITTERS series

CRITTERS

German Titles:
Critters - Sie sind da! / Critters - Sie beißen!

USA, 1986
Director: Stephen Herek

7/10

Highly entertaining 80s critter... I mean creature feature in the style of classic 50s SciFi-flicks, pretty tense and atmospheric but also quite amusing with some really nice acting, good effects and of course the Critters, probably the 80s' most enjoybale monsters next to the Gremlins.

CRITTERS 2: THE MAIN COURSE

German Title:
Critters 2 - Sie kehren zurück

USA, 1988
Director: Mick Garris

6/10

Not as good as Part 1 but still an entertaining sequel. Again we get a quite nice cast, there's much more gore in it and the ending is so hilariously insane, you just have to see it. Sadly it's filled with boring and lengthy scenes, and it could be way more tense.

CRITTERS 3

Alternate Title:
Critters 3: You Are What They Eat

German Title:
Critters 3 - Die Kuschelkiller kommen

USA, 1991
Director: Kristine Peterson

3/10

Poor low-budget sequel, in no way as good as its predecessors. There are 2-3 ok Critter-scenes and it's fun to watch Leonardo Di Caprio in his first role. As for the rest, it's quite lame, horribly boring and rather unentertaining with lousy acting and cheap effects.

CRITTERS 4

Alternate Title:
Critters 4: They're Invading Your Space

German Title:
Critters 4 - Das große Fressen geht weiter

USA, 1991
Director: Rupert Harvey

2/10

Gladly the final Critter-film. Full of lame actors, unfunny dialogue, cheap-looking settings and poor effects, no tension, no atmosphere. Even the Critters aren't fun in here.

TARANTULA

TARANTULA

Alternate Title:
Tarantula!

USA, 1955
Director: Jack Arnold

8/10

A childhood favorite and one of the first 'Horror' movies I've ever seen (only a few weeks after I've seen the similar "Them!"). An absolutely brilliant and entertaining creature feature, pretty tense and creepy with decent acting, good camera work, terrific atmosphere, a fantastic soundtrack and some really impressive effects (the spider totally looks like it's 100 feet tall!). A timeless classic!

THEM!

THEM!

German Title:
Formicula

USA, 1954
Director: Gordon Douglas

7/10

Another great childhood favorite: saw this a couple of weeks after "Tarantula" and although it's not as great, it' still a super-entertaining 50s-flick, very tense and suspenseful with nice acting, creepy and atmospheric settings and a bunch of kick-ass-looking monster ants. Classic!

WHITE NOISE

WHITE NOISE

German Title:
White Noise - Schreie aus dem Jenseits

Canada / UK / USA, 2005
Director: Geoffrey Sax

5/10

A solid ghost movie but far from being special. Pretty good in the first half, disappointing in the second half. Great atmosphere, beautiful cinematography and a couple of nice scares - but also a dull script, a mediocre cast and an extremely stupid ending.

WHITE NOISE: THE LIGHT

Alternate Titles:
White Noise 2: The Light / White Noise 2

German Title:
White Noise - Fürchte das Licht

USA, 2007
Director: Patrick Lussier

6/10

Nice stand-alone-sequel, a bit better than Part 1. A surprisingly great and interesting plot, a very good cast and a couple of absolutely brilliant scares - but sadly it's often annoyingly predictable and alsotoo boring and tedious.

The FEAST series

FEAST

USA, 2005
Director: John Gulager

8/10

An absolutely stunning, refreshing and highly original creature feature that just kicks ass. Full of funny and hilarious, but also disgusting and shocking scenes, great-looking effects, brilliant actors/characters and fantastic ideas. A terrific modern classic you just have to love!

FEAST II: SLOPPY SECONDS

USA, 2008
Director: John Gulager

1/10

What the fuck was John Gulager thinking? He totally destructed Part 1 with a terrible sequel. Nothing in here makes sense, the story is non-existent, the acting is lame, most of the characters are horribly annoying, the CGI looks awful and it's filled with too many tedious scenes, too many pointless scenes and way too many distasteful and totally disgusting scenes (especially the gruesome baby scene which is just inappropriate). One steaming pile of shit.

FEAST III: THE HAPPY FINISH

USA, 2009
Director: John Gulager

1/10

Again, I have to ask: what was John Gulager thinking? Nothing has changed, Feast 3 is about as crappy as Part 2. No story, no suspense, lame acting, awfully bad effects and shit load of annoying and pointless scenes. Let's all hope that there will no Part 4.
