The PROM NIGHT series

PROM NIGHT

German Titles:
Prom Night - Die Nacht des Schlächters / Prom Night - Das Grauen kommt um Mitternacht

Canada, 1980
Director: Paul Lynch

5/10

A decent but highly overrated Halloween rip-off with a really nice cast (Jamie Lee Curtis, Leslie Nielsen...), a fabulous disco soundtrack and some wonderful camera work. The beginning and the finale are great and highly atmospheric - unfortunately nearly everything in between is absolutely tedious, boring and unspectacular, plus the killer and his kills are mostly weak.

HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT II

Alternate Titles:
Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou / Prom Night II / Hello Mary Lou

Alternate German Title:
Mary Lou

Canada, 1987
Director: Bruce Pittman

6/10

A sequel that has got nearly nothing to do with Part 1 but is surprisingly way more entertaining. The story is nothing special and the acting is just average, but there are quite a few very funny, very scary and very tense scenes, neat atmosphere, some extremely good-looking effects and a terrific finale. Fun!

PROM NIGHT III: THE LAST KISS

German Title:
Prom Night III - Das letzte Kapitel

Canada, 1990
Directors: Peter R. Simpson & Ron Oliver

4,5/10

Part 3 is (a) a direct sequel to Part 2, (b) more of a horror-comedy that doesn't take itself too serious and (c) basically pretty entertaining: it's full of decent actors playing silly characters, quite amusing dialogue ("I don't get mad. I bake.") and some hilarious kills (death by icecream, death by battery acid...).
Yet, despite all the fun, the plot is extremely stupid, the script is highly predictable, it's never really tense or scary and the last 15 minutes are so ludicrously over-the-top, it's just annoying.

PROM NIGHT IV: DELIVER US FROM EVIL

German Titles:
Prom Night - Evil Of Darkness / Prom Night - Das Böse aus dem Dunkeln

Canada, 1992
Director: Clay Borris

3/10

Weak sequel that has neither nothing to do with the previous parts, nor with a 'Prom Night'. The story is pointless, the script is badly paced. Tension and atmosphere are scarce, the killer is a lame dork, cast dialogue are quite lame. At least the death/killing scenes are entertaining and Joy Tanner & Nicole de Boer are 2 wonderful eye candies.

PROM NIGHT
(Re-Imagining)

USA / Canada, 2008
Director: Nelson McCormick

2/10

A movie as boring and unspectacular as this one is really hard to find: there's absolutely no tension or suspense, no good actor, nearly no blood, an incredibly lame killer and some terrible dialogue. At least the finale is halfway ok, but overall this is just a lame stinker.
