BEGOTTEN

BEGOTTEN

USA, 1990
Director: E. Elias Merhige

8/10

"Begotten", the experimental/avantgarde full length debut from director Merhige is beyond doubt one of the most disturbing and most depressing movies ever made; a movie so weird and bizarre, it feels like the deformed little brother of "Eraserhead".

No dialogue, hardly any music, hardly any plot, but crammed full of grotesque scenes and horrifying images (a disemboweling kinda-god, a flinching man vomiting organic pieces, bodies violently raped and horridly dismembered, a bleak landscape full of useless tubes and pipes...), all in extremely grainy black&white photography.

What's this all about? Does it make any sense? Is there any meaning? Is it art or just plain horror? Questions upon questions and no answers in sight. Whatever it is, it's absolutely one of the most exceptional things I've seen in my life. Not for the squeamish and not for people who just want to be entertained by a film.

I quote this Imdb-user by saying:
"This is not entertainment. This is disentertainment."
