The RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD series

THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD

German Title:
Verdammt, die Zombies kommen!

USA, 1985
Director: Dan O'Bannon

8/10

Highly entertaining 80s cult classic and surely one of the best horror comedies to date. Extremely fast-paced and action-packed, suspenseful and atmospheric, full of hilarious black humour, brilliant gore, terrific-looking zombies amusing characters and superfunny dialogue, plus: a totally unexpected kick-ass ending.

A must-see for evrry zombie- and 80s-fan!

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II

German Titles:
Toll treiben es die wilden Zombies / Die Rückkehr der Höllenzombies

USA, 1988
Director: Ken Wiederhorn

3/10

An extremely weak sequel which is completely unable to hold a candle to the original. The first 15-20 minutes are pretty ok, but then afterwards it goes downhill at a great pace. Unfunny gags, boring-looking zombies, mediocre actors, no suspense, no atmosphere. Rubbish.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3

USA, 1993
Director: Brian Yuzna

9/10

Holy shit, what the fuck was that? Seriously, this is surprisingly even better than the amazing part 1 and IMO one of the best non-
Romero zombie flicks ever made. Yuzna had the guts to omit the comedy and turn the franchise into a ravishing and emotional zombie love story with loads of ingenious-looking gore, fantastic-looking zombies and terrific effects, with a high amount of tension and some pretty good actors. Absolutely amazing!

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD: NECROPOLIS

Alternate Title:
Return Of The Living Dead 4: Necropolis

USA, 2005
Director: Ellory Elkayem

2/10

One of the most unnecessary sequels from the last decade. Full of horribly unnerving actors and annoying dialogue, lame-looking zombies and poor-looking gore. In the first hour there's actually nothing, absolutely nothing happening, and then the final half hour is just disappointing with an unimpressing zombie attack and a dumb ending. he Only thing I like about this film is Aimee-Lynn Chadwick - not that she's a good actress, she's just the least worst thing in this mess.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD: RAVE TO THE GRAVE

Alternate Title:
Return Of The Living Dead V: Rave To The Grave

USA, 2005
Director: Ellory Elkayem

2/10

Ellory Elkayem did it again with another stupid and completey unnecessary sequel.

Cons: every single acting performance, every single 'funny' dialogue line, the over-use of the word Brains, horrid 90s techno music, a lame plot, lame-looking zombies and all the ugly settings that scream "Let's try to make Romania look like USA"

Pros: some cool gore, the return of Tarman and this quite cool song.

Overall: lousy and forgettable.

The BASKET CASE series

BASKET CASE

German Title:
Basket Case - Der unheimliche Zwilling

USA, 1982
Director: Frank Henenlotter

7/10

A super-hilarious 80s cult classic, very trashy and low budget, but also extremely amusing and entertaining, and even a bit disturbing. The story is great, the script is brilliantly written and paced and nearly every character in here is just excellent. The stop-motion effects look fun, the gore is superb and the dialogue are mostly pretty fun. A splendid movie!

BASKET CASE 2

USA, 1990
Director: Frank Henenlotter

6/10

Part 2 could have been way better if Frank Henenlotter could have made up his mind whether he would have wanted to do a funny, a disturbing or a scary movie - the movie is a mess, but still an entertaining one with even more interesting/hilarious characters, fantastic make-up and special effects, loads of cool gore and an absolutely excellent ending.
BASKET CASE 3: THE PROGENY

German Title:
Basket Case 3 - Die Brut

USA, 1991
Director: Frank Henenlotter

8/10

Ok, Part 2 was only bit weird - Part 3 is just insane, batshit insane! Nothing creepy or scary in here, this movie is one super-grotesque, yet uber-hysterical funfest, packed with so many outrageous characters and effects, it's incrdible: Belial 'gorgeous' girlfriend who gives birth to a dozen of Belial-like little monsters, the musical scene, the overweight genius with his many arms, all the other mutants, the Belial-cyborg, the freaky dominatrix etc. etc.
A total must-see for fans of horror-trash and henenlotter!

FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC

FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC

German Title:
Blumen der Nacht

USA, 1987
Director: Jeffrey Bloom

7/10

Thrilling screen adaptation of the famous book from V.C. Andrews. Very haunting and tense with a gorgeous score and some really great acting performances. A bit too slow in the beginning, but overall quite entertaining.

MUTANTS

MUTANTS

France, 2009
Director: David Morlet

7/10

A really interesting and tense take on the classic epidemic-transforms-mankind-into-zombies-story. No masterpiece but at least a pretty entertaining movie. Creepy and suspenseful in the first third, a bit dull and tedious in the middle, fast-paced and action-packed in the last third. The acting is quite great, the filming locations are very well chosen and there's loads of terrific gore and amazing-looking zombies.

Well done!

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE

German Title:
Unheimliche Schattenlichter

USA, 1983
Directors: John Landis (prologue & segment 1), Steven Spielberg (segment 2), Joe Dante (segment 3), George Miller (segment 4 & epilogue)

7/10

Nice anthology movie based on the classic TV series. Surprisingly Spielberg's & Landis' episodes are just average. It's the ones from Dante & Miller who are really kick-ass and know how to scare in a fun way.

SORORITY ROW (Original & Remake)

THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW

Alternate Title:
House Of Evil

USA, 1983
Director: Mark Rosman

8/10

A criminally underrated 80s slasher with a surprisingly good story, decent actors, a couple of terrific kills and an absolutely awesome-looking killer in a fantastic clown costume. Very creepy, very thrilling and highly suspenseful - a great genre classic!

SORORITY ROW

German Title:
Sorority Row - Schön bis in den Tod

USA, 2009
Director: Stewart Hendler

9/10

A simply astonishing remake, actually even better than the already great original. Unbelievably thrilling and suspenseful from the beginning to the end, with a superb-written script, a great killer, stunning kills and loads of beautiful-looking girls. A big surprise and definitely one of the greatest slashers in years

THE GATE 1 & 2

THE GATE

German Title:
Gate - Die Unterirdischen

Canada / USA, 1987
Director: Tibor Takács

7/10

Quite cheesy but highlyy entertaining 80s cult classic with a really nice story, lots of brilliant-looking special / make-up effects and an entertaining cast. Always fun to watch!

GATE II: RETURN TO THE NIGHTMARE

Alternate Titles:
The Gate II: Trespassers / Gate 2: The Trespassers

USA, 1990
Director: Tibor Takács

5/10

A decent sequel, again with great effects and a nice plot, but unfortunately not as original and entertaining as the first part.

GHOSTBUSTERS 1 & 2

GHOSTBUSTERS

German Title:
Ghostbusters - Die Geisterjäger

USA, 1984
Director: Ivan Reitman

8/10

A super-entertaining 80s cult-classic, funny and amusing but also a bit spooky. The cast is absolutely top notch, the special effects look awesome, soundtrack and camera work are terrific and (most notably) the dialogue is just marvellous. Great!

GHOSTBUSTERS II

USA, 1989
Director: Ivan Reitman

7/10

Not as great as Part 1 but still pretty fun. Again with a terrific cast, brilliant special effects and cool camera work. The plot is a bit silly but at least tolerable.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL

USA, 2009
Director: Ti West

5/10

A decent but horribly overrated 80s tribute, which could have been much better.
The acting is great, the 80s feeling is hilariously brilliant (The credits! The music! Great!), the house looked fantastic and there are some amazing scares.
Unfortunately it's too slow. MUCH too slow. Usually I like slow-paced movies, but... well: 75 minutes of slowness and boredom, then suddenly 15 minutes brutal gorefest - that definitely does not satisfy.
I recommend watching 'Babysitter Wanted' which is similar to this one but significantly better.

FRANKENSTEIN

FRANKENSTEIN

USA, 1931
Director: James Whale

7/10

One of the biggest and most popular horror classics of all time. Very atmospheric and thrilling, packed with beautifully haunting settings, great make-up / 'special' effects and neat actors (most notably the fantastic Boris Karloff).
A bit overrated and I hate the fact that it hasn't much to do with Mary Shelley's magnificent novel, nevertheless it's a timeless movie and always funt to watch.

DAY OF THE DEVILS

DAY OF THE DEVILS

Original Title:
Tag der Teufel

Austria, 2007
Director: Elmar Weihsman and Stefan Peczelt

1/10

Unbelievably terrible and completely unprofessional lowest-budget production. The Perchten look great and there's some nice 80s feeling over the movie - sadly this all does not help when everything else is crap: every single actor is horribly annoying, the effects look mostly tacky, the dialogue is unbearably bad and overall it's extremely tedious and boring.

A PERFECT GETAWAY

A PERFECT GETAWAY

USA, 2009
Director: David Twohy

3/10

This movie could have been good, really good. It's full of great-looking settings, splendid actors (Milla!) and interesting plot twists - but unfortunately they turned all these good things into a mega-boring, super-tedious, cliché-laden, unoriginal and extremely disappointing piece of crap.

THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES

THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES

German Titles:
Die Mothman Prophezeiungen / The Mothman Prophecies - Tödliche Visionen

USA, 2002
Director: Mark Pellington

9/10

Absolutely fantastic and super-creepy scarefest, unbelievably thrilling and incredibly atmospheric with a terrific plot, a brilliant cast (Richard Gere is outstanding in here!!), a brilliantly written script, wonderful camera work, a few disturbingly effective images and a dark undertone that's absolutely depressing. A criminally underrated masterpiece!

HALLOWED GROUND

HALLOWED GROUND

German Title:
Evil Ground

USA, 2007
Director: David Benullo

6/10

Most reviews for this movie are bad, really bad, and to a certain degree I understand why: the acting is often pretty lame, it's a bit tedious in the middle and the CGI effects look mostly terrible. Nevertheless I really enjoyed it (especially because I'm a fan of scarecrows): the plot is great and I definitely didn't expected it to be that interesting. It's atmospheric and tense, full of really terrific kills, the scarecrow looks badass and the ending is totally satisfying.
A flawed but enjoyable b-movie!

THE MUMMY

THE MUMMY

German Title:
Die Mumie

USA, 1999
Director: Stephen Sommers

7/10

An amusing variation on the classic Mummy-story and, of course, a highly entertaining popcorn movie which takes itself not too seriously. Full of nice actors, funny dialogue and great special effects, plus: it has some kind of Indiana-Jones-feeling all over it. Fun!

KILL THEORY

KILL THEORY

USA, 2009
Director: Chris Moore

4/10

Pretty weak modern slasher which is way too predictable and way too slow-paced. The plot is stupid, most of the actors are weak and/or annoying and the script is quite dull. At least there's some cool gore and 2-3 ok suspense-scenes.
Too bad because the basic idea for this flick is simply great. This could have been sooo much better...

THE INNOCENTS

THE INNOCENTS

German Title:
Schloß des Schreckens

UK, 1961
Director: Jack Clayton

8/10

An absolutely terrific and super-scary horror classic, highly suspenseful and thrilling, but also a bit disturbing. Story and script are brilliantly written, the cast is awesome (especially Deborah Kerr and Pamela Franklin), the settings look hauntingly beautiful, camera work and lighting are superb and, what's best, it's packed with truly frightening scares and shocks. Great film!

THE JACKET

THE JACKET

USA, 2005
Director: John Maybury

6/10

One of the most overrated movies of the last years. An interesting story, great acting (Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley...), a suspenseful first half and some really great cinematography. Sadly it gets a bit dull and tedious in the second half and I'm also no fan of the lame time-travel-direction the plot takes.

THE RETURN

THE RETURN

USA, 2006
Director: Asif Kapadia

8/10

I totally love it when a horror movie surprises me - and this one was actually a huge, HUGE surprise because I never expected it to be that great. "The Return" is a terrifically fabulous scarefest with a brilliant story, a surprisingly awesome Sarah Michelle Gellar (another huge surprise!), wonderful atmosphere and loads of scenes that creeped the shit out of me. Very thrilling, very suspenseful - excellent film, highly recommended!

WALLED IN

WALLED IN

USA / France / Canada, 2009
Director: Gilles Paquet-Brenner

3/10

Weak horror rubbish. The building looked astonishingly brilliant and the first 30 minutes of the movie are quite cool - yet, the rest is simply bad, completely unscary and unsuspenseful with poor acting, a crap script and a terrible, TERRIBLE plot (it's hard to describe how terrible the plot is - let's just say it's terrible).

05 January 2010

The GINGER SNAPS series

GINGER SNAPS

German Title:
Ginger Snaps - Das Biest in dir

Canada, 2000
Director: John Fawcett

10/10

Undoubtedly one of the best and most impressive werewolf movies ever made.
I remember when my Mum recommended this movie to me after she saw it on TV and I was like "Um yeah, teenage werewolf-girls... whatever." Well, a few days later I rented it and then I was like OMG WTF?
It's a brilliant movie that works on so many levels: it's funny and amusing, but it's also action-packed, atmospheric and scary, intelligent and deep, emotional and moving. The cast is amazing (Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle are outstanding), there's some magnificent cinematography, magnificent settings, terrific effects and a brilliant script. An excellent movie, highly recommended!

Wiki ~ Imdb

GINGER SNAPS: UNLEASHED

Alternate Title:
Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed

German Title:
Ginger Snaps II: Entfesselt

Canada, 2004
Director: Brett Sullivan

9,5/10

Surprisingly brilliant and nearly as good as Part 1. The story goes into a completely different but interesting direction with a fabulously intelligent and twisted script. Not as humorous and emotional, but darker, creepier and more fast-paced, again with fantastic camera work, brilliant settings and awesome effects. Emily Perkins' performance is even better than in the original and her new partner in crime Tatiana Maslany is also pretty amazing.
Why can't all sequels be as good as this one?

Wiki ~ Imdb

GINGER SNAPS BACK: THE BEGINNING

German Title:
Ginger Snaps III - Der Anfang

Canada, 2004
Director: Grant Harvey

5/10

An interesting but sadly extremely disappointing kinda-prequel about the ancestors of the Fitzgerald sisters and the origins of the werewolf curse.
Pros: Perkins and Isabelle's acting is great as usual. It's highly atmospheric, extremely well shot, full of great make-up effects and beautiful-looking settings.
Cons: it's often way too slow and tedious, many of the characters are either uninteresting or simply annoying, the werewolves costumes look shoddy and the dialogue is too boring and humourless.

FRAILTY

FRAILTY

German Title:
Dämonisch

USA, 2001
Director: Bill Paxton

9/10

Bill Paxton's directorial debut, an excellently thrilling and haunting horror movie, unfortunately still quite underrated. It's terrifically suspenseful and extremely intense, with a stunningly intelligent and twisted story, loads of superb edge-of-seat-scenes and an outstanding cast. A total must-see!
