The infamous "Bride Of The Monster" from the notorious schlock-meister Ed Wood is of course a really bad movie - but to my surprise, it's not as bad as I thought it would be, plus: it's definitely way more entertaining than "Plan 9".
It's obviously low-budgeted and poorly done. Wood's direction is as wooden as always and his script just a ridiculously written and badly paced mess, not forgetting the plot itself which is just laughable.
In some scenes the 'monster' is a ridiculous-looking rubber-octopus that lies motionless in the water, in other scenes it's just badly-used stock footage of a real-life octopus.
Furthermore, the lab-settings look rubbish, the fight-scenes are all lame and nearly every single character was forced to do annoyingly illogical or stupid things.
Still, Wood managed to do at least a few atmospheric scenes, Bela Lugosi's performances ist just brilliant, there's some absolutely neat dialogue in here (f.e. the 'I have no home'-speech and all the funny 'Yes, sir? (...) Yes, sir.' stuff)
and it certainly is always fun to watch the completely untalented Tor Johnson. :-)

Another one I haven't seen in years but a marvelously awful movie. It makes you wonder if Wood was truly making awful movies on purpose. The lab equipment was a riot here and the cardboard sets are a hoot. The walls of the lab don't even touch the bottom if I remember right.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure he was a passionate but completely untalented dicrector who just didn't realize how bad his movies really look like.
ReplyDeleteSame goes for people like Bert I. Gordon or Harold P. Warren
I'll go on a limb and say Mr. B.I.G. was at least able to squeeze a modicum of suspense in his movies, at least until the creatures showed up. Still, given a proper budget, it would be interesting to see what Gordon could have done. His two COLOSSAL MAN movies are pretty decent, I think especially the first movie. Speaking of Gordon, I found some cool behind the scenes shots of the "FX artists" creating the ants in EMPIRE OF THE ANTS in one of my old Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines.
ReplyDeleteok, you're right. He was definitely able to create some suspense, but all of his FX... brr, terrible. Especially the horrid-looking monster-wasps and monster-chickens in 'Food Of The Gods'
ReplyDeletelol, Gortner's boxing match with that Muppet chicken was a riot!
ReplyDeleteThe scenes with those worms were pretty damn squirm inducing I thought, and aside from a few shots with the rats, were the most potent creature shots in the whole movie.
