I SAW THE DEVIL

I SAW THE DEVIL

Original Title:
Akmareul boatda

German Title:
I Saw The Devil - Rache ist ein tiefer Abgrund

South Korea, 2010
Director: Kim Ji-Woon

7/10

A powerful South Korean revenge-thriller from the director of the stunning "A Tale Of Two Sisters" - sadly, not as brilliant as I expected it to be.

What I liked:
It's packed with loads of awesome suspense (f.e. the girl waiting for the towing service),
really cool action (f.e. the kick-ass car-door scene)
and brutal kills / super-violent torture scenes (a good deal of cut off / cut through body parts, stabbings, decapitations, etc.).
Lee Byung-hun and "Oldboy" Choi Min-sik's performances are absolutely overwhelming, Mogae Lee's calm camera work is outstanding and I'd say that every single setting / film location looks just amazing (including the most atmospheric greenhouse since "High Tension").

What I disliked:
At about 140 minutes it's faaar too long.
Many scenes felt too long / too stretched, many scenes were just tediously tiresome. They could have easily trimmed it down to 100-110 minutes.

  1. Been looking into this one! Can't wait to see it.

    By the way, I again love your choice of a High Tension picture for your banner.

  2. Another one you've piqued my interest on, Maynard. I saw this disc somewhere and now must see the film. I haven't watched any Korean horror lately.

  3. I liked this one much more than you did. Choi Min-sik was as terrifying as he was realistic. He definitely gave me the creeps. I gave this one a 8.50/10, because I thought it was wonderfully-crafted, believable, gruesome, uncompromising and kinda scary.

    hehe thanx. I'm pretty sure I will use more High-Tension-stills in the near future. There are sooo many extremely awesome-looking pictures in this film, it's almost incredible

    @Venom:
    me too. Always a pleasure to watch Korean films. Most of them look absolutely fantastic and are full of stunning actors.

    @George:
    well, it was too long for my taste, still it's a great and brilliant-looking movie with an amazing cast.

  5. If you thoroughly enjoy Asian horror, look into "Dream Home" by director Ho-Cheung Pang...the ending was a bit disappointing, but the kills were stunningly creative.
