Another one of those silly and cheap-made SyFy films, yet a surprisingly enjoyable one. Compared to the lame, similarly low-budgeted films from The Asylum, this one's just kick-ass.
Of course it's bad. The whole movie looks pretty awful, the plot sucks, the acting is largely horrible, most of the dialogue is just stupid and many of the CGI effects look terribly silly.
However, there are a few reasons why I liked it:
* It absolutely doesn't take itself seriously.
* It absolutely never gets boring.
* The acting is so bad, it's fun.
* It's packed with loads of hilarious scenes where the ridiculously brilliant-looking Sharktopus kills people or animals in really amusing ways (check out the bungee jumping scene!).
* Highlight #1: the scene where the Sharktopus walks on land.
* Highlight #2: a wonderful Roger Corman cameo.
Love cheese? Love bad movies? Love campy stuff? Enjoy watching movies with your brain turned off?
Then this is definitely your movie :-)

I rented this one strictly for Corman's involvement and that his DINOCROC was pretty good. SHARKTOPUS was boring as all hell to me. I fell asleep about 40 minutes into it and never bothered watching the rest. I saw DINO SHARK in the vid store the other day and just passed on it. How these newer, wretched animal amuck movies are as popular as they are is beyond me. I guess you could say they're the modern equivalent to the ultra cheapies of the 50s and 60s, anyway.
ReplyDeleteyeah, you're totally right - and it's getting 'worse'!
