THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD
German Title:
Alarm für Sperrzone 7
USA, 1957
Director: Arnold Laven
6/10
Sadly, the pacing is pretty weak. There are many boring and really tedious scenes, especially in the tiresome middle part.
Nevertheless, this is by all means a neat and enjoyable creature feature, highly recommended to fans of oldschool b-movies and monster flicks.

A solid and pretty entertaining 50s monster movie about a
mutated giant killer mollusk.
mutated giant killer mollusk.
- sounds silly but surprisingly works pretty good due to a cool-looking and well-designed animatronic monster (though unfortunately, we don't get to see it very often).
It's also full of really suspenseful scenes, the soundtrack is powerful and rousing,
and the acting is mostly really good and believable (most notably Audrey Dalton and Tim Holt).

Note:
The title is pretty nonsense because
the monster is at no time a danger for the whole world.
However, it's definitely more attracting than the superlame German Title 'Alarm für Sperrzone 7' = 'Alarm for Exclusion Zone 7'.

Glad you liked this one, Maynard! It's a nicely shot, compact monster flick and one whose larger than life title kept me on the lookout for it as a kid. There's a scene of it that crops up in the original PIRANHA, too.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this was one I never got to see on the Saturday Night Monster Movie as a kid - it was this century before it finally unspooled before my eyes. You reviewed it well - great moments, slow pace, flabby middle section. I like the stuff with the canals, and the monster is definitely cool. Nice post!
ReplyDelete@venom:
ReplyDeleteYeah, apart from the flawed middle section, I really enjoyed it.
In Piranha? Really?
Can't remember; haven't seen the original Piranha in a long time.
@Craig:
Thanx!
Oh yes, the canal scene is extremely chilling, and the monster is just supercool :)
Can't believe this was on Turner Classic the other night, and I loved it! Kudos Maynard for blowing the dust off of this one!
ReplyDeleteNow I will be waiting on your review of Freight Night! From the current trailers, it didn't look a lot like the original. (no Roddey McDowell- I loved him in that!)
@Anon:
ReplyDeleteThe trailer sucks and I'm sure that it will be a disappointing remake.
Fright Night is one of the greatest horror films in history and there was absolutely no need for a remake.
Let's hope that it'll be watchable at least.
