Horror Blog Of The Month: ZOMBIES DON'T RUN

Summer is over, Autumn is near.
Another "Horror Blog Of The Month" is here!

"ZOMBIES DON'T RUN" is not only a very true statement, it's also the hilarious blog from the hilarious Tennesseean Chuck Conry, undoubtedly one of the most entertaining guys in the horror blogosphere.

He's got a brilliant taste in horror (just check his Top 10 Lists), watching all kinds of horror stuff from the classics to the cheesy z-grade crap, plus: he sometimes also blogs about non-horror-stuff (f.e. Love And Other Drugs, The Hangover...).
His reviews are mostly crisp, to the point and very enjoyable.

Even better than his blog is Chuck's facebook page where he's constantly posting outrageously funny messages and one-liners.

Examples:

Maynard:
Hi Chuck! Who are you and why do you blog?

Chuck:
My name is Chuck Conry and I blog because one day I got the self centered and silly idea that if I wrote about movies and other stuff there might be a wide range of people who might want to read it and actually enjoy it. Now here I sit today with a site that people do visit and read, bad grammar and all...Yay!

Which movie made you a horror fan (and why)?

This question is always a hard one to answer but I'm going to be 100% honest. It was Friday the 13th, and not even a good entry into the series, it was Friday the 13th: A New Beginning.
Before the coolness of the gore and idea of big bad ass in a mask killing people set in, I think I was just drawn to these movies by the amount of boobs that were in the film. For whatever reason this was the only Friday the 13th film my family had on VHS and while it wasn't that good, it DID have a large amount of boobies. So I figured if this had a lot of that stuff surely other horror movies would too. Of course when I matured I started liking horror for more traditional reasons.

Who is your favorite horror director (and why)?

As much as I love horror I've had a hard time finding a single director that I can say is my hands down favorite. For movies in general I love Quentin Tarantino. I wait for every movie he has to come out, I own all his movies, and I at least like everything he has out.
In horror, I like a lot of Wes Craven stuff. I like a lot of George Romero and Lucio Fulci movies as well. But at the same time they all have movies I hate or dislike. So I don't really have a solid favorite, but those three would be in consideration for the top of my list if I made one.

Your alltime horror favorites are...

Right off the top of my head what comes to mind is
Dawn of the Dead (the original), Return of the Living Dead, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Evil Dead, Black Christmas, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
I also like some odd stuff that some people don't seem to care for as much like, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Pieces.

What's the worst horror movie you've seen so far?

I saw this horrible movie once before I ever started writing about movies called, Hip Hop Massacre.
The name alone should have been enough for me to run far far away, but I have this bad mental condition where I'll at least watch anything once. It starred some half arsed rap group, looked cheap, and was just overall horrendous. I've never reviewed it for the site, but I'd probably give it a negative score if I ever did like a -10/10

Most of my friends don't like horror movies. What about your friends?

I got friends that are hit and miss with it. Some kinda like it and some don't. I do have one friend however that is about as obsessed with it as I am and he's probably THE biggest Halloween fan I've ever seen. He even has horror tattoos, something I don't even have.

Choose:
Leatherface? Jason? Michael? Freddy? Other?

He's a bit of a Momma's boy but I'll go with Jason.
I may like some of the other's films more so than I do Jason's but he, for whatever reason, seems way more likable than the rest. Plus, he's got a way better excuse for his murdering of sex crazed, drugged up, teenagers.

Choose:
US horror? European horror? Asian horror? Other?

I'm very happy to be an American but we are probably at the bottom of the list when you rank horror film quality by countries. I love Asian horror and that's probably my #1 from a pure blood and gore point of view, yet at the same time for shock and awe I'd go with anything French.

Dou you prefer watching horror at home or at the theater?

If it's a crowd that's really into what they are seeing and jumping and screaming from what's happening on screen I'd go with the theater. However, a lot of times I'd just assume be at my own home relaxing and fully enjoying movies without any distractions.

What music do you like

I like a little bit of everything. I go through phases where I'll just listen to Rock. Then I'll listen to Rap for a bit other times. So my taste kinda rotates, but if I had to list groups and artists, I really love Pink Floyd, The Cure, OutKast, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Katy Perry (mostly due to her looks), I could go on and on really.

What do you read?

I don't read a lot outside of comic books. I'm a big Marvel fan. I really like Punisher, Daredevil, and all that stuff. I can dig Batman from DC but that's about it from DC. When it comes to legit books, I've read all of Max Brooks stuff and I've also recently read The Perks of Being a Wallflower... No Twilight..sorry ladies.

Tell me the first 3 things that come to your mind when you think about Austria:

What's that?
Oh, is that like Australia?
Kangaroos!!!

Anything else?

If you've not checked out my web-site then by all means give it a try. I'm the only person who writes there, we also have Shannon Rullo who does Cannibal Kitchen and she's a lot easier on the eyes than I am. I also should point out there's a lore more than just horror and movies being talked about on the site. Also, any single hot ladies who might be reading this between the ages of 18 to 28 feel free to hit me up..wink wink.

Thanx Chuck!

  1. Great stuff and interview, Maynard! I thought I had ZDR on my blog roll, but it seems not. Consider it followed!

  2. Yay for Chuck! Excellent pick, Maynard. Always enjoy reading zombie and non-zombie related stuff from that guy.

Psssst, by the way, I'm not doing Shark Zone for Project Terrible... I think I accidentally gave Cinema Gonzo two picks and he just did Razortooth so I don't know if he's going to do Shark Zone as well or not. Anyway, instead of that one I'm doing one called Zombie Nation (an absolutely horrid piece of crap - I can't wait to vent about that movie).

Thanx Michele. You're fully right, his posts are always highly enjoyable.

    Ah, ok. Will change it.

OMG... you dare to watch ZOMBIE NATION???
VERY excited to hear what you think about it. It's currently on #10 in IMDB's 'Bottom Top 100'.

Other 'movies' from Zombie Nation director Ulli Lommel are on #1 and #26. LOL
