EVIL THINGS

EVIL THINGS

USA, 2009/2011
Director: Dominic Perez

6/10

"Evil Things" is another pretty good found-footage flick. It's flawed and far from being perfect, but due to great atmosphere and some surprisingly intense scenes, I ended up pretty satisfied.

The flawed things:
The dialogue is largely terrible. The nice but boring characters are talking so much pointless rubbish, it's often pretty annoying.
The first half hour is a bit too slow-paced, the script is a bit messed up and there are definitely way too many open and unanswered questions. Plus: the title is completely misleading.

The great things:
The movie is very well built up: starts out as some kinda "Duel" in Winter, turns into an eerie "Blair Witch" variation and ends with a gripping quasi-slasher finale. The movie is packed with terrifying suspense-moments and a certain kind of atmosphere that is really, really unsettling.
The acting is neat and believable, the camera work looks great and the inserted background music is downright creepy.

Enjoyable handheld horror, recommended to every fan of this subgenre.

  1. I am an unabashed fan of found footage horror. Total sucker for it, can't help myself. Been hearing some decent enough stuff about this and Grave Encounters so I'll be checking them out once I get all the October stuff out of the way!

    Thanks for the review!

  3. Harry, what was flawed about it, in your opinion. I thought it was well-executed and conceived and it didn't really have any major flaws.
I disagree about the characters - they were everything but boring and the connection between them was so believable. Glad you enjoyed it though. There were moments, I was literally shaking in my pants. :)

  4. well, the dialogue was often unbearable (in the car, in the restaurant), I wasnt very keen on the characters and a faster pace would have been great.
Apart from that, I really enjoyed it.

  5. I finally watched it early this morning around 3am and it definitely got under my skin the way BLAIR WITCH did in the theater. I didn't mind the dialog or acting. It seemed very natural to me. The only part that somewhat bored me was the credits. I watched through them and all it was was all the footage the killer had shot of the protagonists. Without the credits, it's a relatively brisk 73 minutes.

Overall, I thought it was money well spent, although I would have a hard time recommending it to most horror fans, though, since "little to nothing happens".

The last few 'Found Footage' movies I've seen have all surpassed that infuriatingly shitty V/H/S and what's most irritating is that film has been garnering a high amount of undeserved exposure while better movies remain under the radar.

    1. Ha, looks like you're currently riding on the found-footage train :-)

Not a masterpiece but it's way better than expected. Like I mentioned, the first half hour bored me a lot, but the rest was pretty good.

It's clearly a movie for fans of FF. People who enjoy their horror gory and violent should stay away.

Ha, I've also seen a few great FF flicks lately and they were all better than V/H/S. Watch out for upcoming reviews of APARTMENT 143 & GREYSTONE PARK.

  6. Oh, I was curious just what the title was supposed to be about. There's a nursery rhyme at the end that seems to be the origin, but it's still kind of vague unless I overlooked something considering it was so late.

    1. I still have no idea. There are a few threads on Imdb where users talking about the same thing. None of them figured it out.
