It's no secret: I'm a huge fan of Patrick Rea's work. He's a terrific director and most of his short films are absolutely excellent.
Now after more than 20 shorts and the rather unknown "The Empty Acre" from 2007 (which I will see sometime in the next few weeks), he finally delivers his second full-length feature: "Nailbiter", a creepy, highly original and very well made low-budget horror movie that strongly reminds me of oldschool "Twilight Zone" or "X-Files" episodes.
I love the story which deals with an alcoholic mother and her 3 daughters who flee from a Tornado and seek shelter in the storm cellar of some farmhouse where they encounter a gruesome and carnivorous creature.
The movie is wonderfully directed and brilliantly scripted. It's tense and thrilling from beginning to end, full of gripping and extremely haunting scenes, and there's absolutely no dull moment here.
The look of "Nailbiter" is awesome, thanks to the eerie settings (cellar, hidden room), absolutely fabulous editing, some surprisingly good-looking CGI and the striking cinematography of longtime Rea-collaborator Hanuman Brown-Eagle.
The characters are all very well written, complex, interesting, believable and extremely likable, and the acting is just awesome, especially the performances from the gorgeous Meg Saricks and the 2 young girls, Sally Spurgeon & Emily Boresow.
Highlights: the cool creature design, Julian Bickford's explosive and mindblowingly awesome score, the Tornado-scene, the sequence where Alice watches over her sleeping sister, the scary cradle-scene and the grim finale.
"Nailbiter" is a kick-ass and must-see indie-horror-flick, recommended to fans of old school AND new school horror.
I'm highly excited for the sequel which is already in the works!Huge Thanks to Patrick Rea who provided me with a screener of "Nailbiter"!

Sounds awesome! Seeing as soon as I can!
ReplyDeleteI really hope you will see this soon because it's a really fantastic film. Don't know when this will be officially released, but as far as I know it'll be at some festivals this year.
ReplyDeleteHarry, how did you manage to see it? Did it leak online or you were at a special screening? I really want to see this one!
ReplyDeletePatrick Rea sent me a screener.
ReplyDeletewhoops, forgot to mention in the review.
ReplyDeleteHow can I get one too? :) I'll write the most wonderful review ever :)
ReplyDeleteLOL I don't know. Maybe ask him? :)
ReplyDeleteI know him from Facebook since I first saw his award-winning short "Get Off My Porch" last year in Spring.
He's a really cool guy. He once did an interview for me and he also sent me links and screeners for most of his short films.
This film looks so freaking awesome, I can't help myself but asking him. Tried to search for his e-mail on the internet, and I ended up with director77@hotmail.com. Not sure if it's his though. Can you confirm? If that's it, I'm gonna delete the comment for good. :) Is it ok if I tell him I know you well and he can trust me? :)
ReplyDeleteNope, don't have any mail-adress from him. We send mails on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteAre you on FB? If not, join - it's fun!
Sorry, buddy, but I'm a big facebook hater. Boo me. LOL. :)
ReplyDeleteOkay then, I'll try with the one I found, and I hope this is the proper e-mail of Patrick. If he needs you to confirm you know me, please do it. I'm desperate to see this flick. :)
I'm in the mood for monster flicks lately. I might check this one out!
ReplyDelete@George:
ReplyDeleteAny specific reasons for your Facebook-hate?
@Kaijinu:
you have to, it's brilliant!
NAILBITER is NOT his first full-length feature... it's his second. His first feature is THE EMPTY ACRE.
ReplyDelete@Anon:
ReplyDeleteThat's news to me. There's no runtime on the Empty Acre Imdb-page, and even Patrick didn't tell me anything about it...
Great review for an awesome movie! I reviewed over at my blog. Glad you got to see it too, Maynard!
ReplyDelete@Anon:
ReplyDeleteWhoops, you're right. I just asked him and he'll send me a copy of the Acre.
@Char:
Hey, thanx! Just saw your review - fully agree with you!
Whoa, I am definitely going to have to get my hands on this. I love these kinds of movies.
ReplyDelete@Mel
ReplyDeleteI hope you get a chance to see it soon. It's a cool and kick-ass mosnter movie you really need to see.
Creature fx, or lack thereof, almost ruined the promising movie. Imdb has it at 4 right now, but I would go 6.5. Liked it!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm surprised about the low rating.
ReplyDeleteI admit, there could have been more creature fx - nevertheless, I just loved this movie!
