After their wonderful debut "Teddy", a great little 80s-slasher homage, Steve Goltz and Kevin Sommerfield come up with another cool short film: "Popularity Killer", a brilliant and extremely enjoyable highschool slasher which is even better than "Teddy".
It's entertaining and amusing, but also pretty tense and atmospheric from the first to the last minute. The whole atmosphere of it reminded me a bit of movies like "Final Exam" or "Night School".

After their wonderful debut "Teddy", a great little 80s-slasher homage, Steve Goltz and Kevin Sommerfield come up with another cool short film: "Popularity Killer", a brilliant and extremely enjoyable highschool slasher which is even better than "Teddy".
It's entertaining and amusing, but also pretty tense and atmospheric from the first to the last minute. The whole atmosphere of it reminded me a bit of movies like "Final Exam" or "Night School".
The direction is great, Sommerfield's well-paced script is almost flawless, the soundtrack is quite chilling, there's lots of really cool sound effects and Dan Delaye's camera work is once again just marvellous (gorgeous shots, great close-ups, beautiful cinematography).
The killer is just awesome: he wears a pretty creepy mask that looks a bit like the one from "Don't Open Till Christmas", his kills are gory and brutal, and he even got his own eerie theme music - how awesome is that?
Actors and characters are all superb, especially cute main actress Courtney Ellen Bay, hottie Jennifer Frey as uber-ignorant blonde ("Night Of The Living Dead... This movie is stupid. It's not even in colour.") and Mike Goltz, again as absolutely hilarious asshole ("I'm not drunk... I'm coping." / "I'm heeere! Party's gettin' started!" / "Cue the fuckin' violins!" / "Biiiiiiitch!").
Oh btw, am I the only one who thinks that Matty Dorschner looks a bit like Jeremy Sisto in "May"?
Overall, "Popularity Killer" is a very well made and absolutely ace little slasher movie. I really hope that Goltz and Sommerfield soon come up with a full length feature!
