Davide Melini Double Feature: THE PUZZLE / THE SWEET HAND OF THE WHITE ROSE

Italian filmmaker Davide Melini is the writer, director and producer of various award-winning short films.
Just recently, he invited me to watch/review his latest 2 films:

THE PUZZLE
(5minute short)

Spain, 2008
Director: Davide Melini

6,5/10

"The Puzzle" is a creepy and cool looking short about a troubled woman, her money-hungring son and a mysterious puzzle.

It's tense and thrilling, incredibly atmospheric, beautifully filmed, full of great shots and pretty interesting camera angles. The editing is excellent, the soundtrack is powerful and the marvellous lighting makes the woman's little flat look very eerie.

Flaws: Cachito Noguera's performance is mediocre, there's not enough information about the back story and I think the whole film should have been at least 5-6 minutes longer.

THE SWEET HAND OF THE WHITE ROSE
(16minute short)

Spain, 2010
Director: Davide Melini

7,5/10

Yay for the superb "The Sweet Hand Of The White Rose" (cool title, btw) which I enjoyed way more than Melini's previous short.

From the first to the last minute, it looks absolutely striking, due to the excellent cinematography, terrific editing and various fabulous settings, especially the cool 'Zeppelin' rock bar and the uber-creepy cemetery which strongly reminded me of the forgotten 80s classic "One Dark Night".

The story about a guy who just had a quarrel with his GF and the 'ghost' of a little girl, is told in an interesting and intriguing way. The acting is solid, the make-up effects look great and the soundtrack, which consists of powerful strings and guitars, is just kick-ass.

A bit too predictable and the ending message is a bit cheesy - but overall, "The Sweet Hand..." is a really, really superb film.

  1. It's really very cool that you spotlight these short films, which are often hard to find if you don't know to look for them. Kudos Maynard!
