(Horror) Blog Of The Month: TALES FROM THE BATCAVE

March is the perfect month for some cave diving... um, Batcave diving :-)

Yes, this month's HBOTM is "TALES FROM THE BATCAVE", the highly entertaining blog from Mitch a.k.a. Mr. Bones, a nice guy from Lanett, Alabama.
BATCAVE is not a 'horror blog' per se, it's a blog about horror and other genres, comics, video games, music etc.
Mr. Bones is regularly posting stuff like movie reviews, horror reviews, videos, best-of-lists, photos, playlists, screenshots, comic reviews, posters, travel reports, etc. etc. etc.

Hop into the BATCAVE and have some fun - you'll like it here!

Maynard:
Who are you and why do you blog?

Mitch:
I am Mitch Reaves, aka Mister Bones or Lil Bones. I originally got into blogging way back in 03 or so because I was posting on a lot of online gaming forums and meeting a lot of new people, most of whom had blogs of their own. Sounded like something I would have fun with, so I started the original Tales from the Batcave. It focused primarily on gaming, but would go on to include my other passions in life: comics, movies, sports, music, and horror.

Which movie made you a horror fan (and why)?

There has been a lot of debate on this answer over the years, and by debate I of course mean arguing with myself as nobody else really cares. It would be almost impossible for me to remember the first horror movie I watched that started me down the path to where I've ended up, but the one that I most often give the credit to is
"Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives". For me it was the total package, it scared me, it made me laugh, it had good gore, inventive kills, and a hockey mask wearing maniac wielding a machete.

Who is your favorite horror director (and why)?

Another really tough one, and to give just one answer feels like an insult to so many great directors, but I gotta give it to John Carpenter. He's not only responsible for some of the greatest horror films of all time, but he is also one of those directors that really pushes the boundary about what we consider horror versus action, comedy, drama or just about any other genre you can name.

What are your alltime horror favorites?

In no particular order...
- Friday the 13th Part VI
- A Nightmare on Elm Street 3
- The Thing
- Silver Bullet
- Evil Dead 2
- Aliens
- Predator
- Halloween
- Trick R Treat
- An American Werewolf in London
- Night of the Creeps
- Return of the Living Dead
- Dawn of the Dead
- The Ruins
- Ginger Snaps
- The Devils Rejects
etc. etc.

What's the worst horror movie you've seen so far?

Does the Nic Cage "Wicker Man" count as horror?
If not, I'll say anything directed by Uwe Boll, or the "Day of the Dead" remake.

Most of my friends don't like horror movies. What about your friends?

Most of my friends dig the occasional horror flick, but few are as dedicated to it as I am. I do have one or two friends that I'm constantly talking to about horror movies though.

Choose:
Jason? Michael? Freddy? Other?

My all-time favorite, Jason Voorhees.
He's a walking death machine, he wears a hockey mask, never says a word, doesn't have an ounce of mercy or remorse in his body, and he always comes up with the most hilariously brutal ways to slaughter people.
Sleeping bag scene anyone?

Choose:
US Horror? European Horror? Asian Horror? Other?

Can I say all of the above? There have been periods in my life where I was all about the horror films being produced by all of these areas. At the present though it seems as if those wacky Australians are knocking them outta the park.

Do you prefer watching horror at home or at the theater?

Almost always at home, and depending on the type of movie, sometimes at home all by myself. Some horror flicks are best viewed with a group of friends and a drink or two, some I want to be alone in complete silence and for the house to be as dark as possible. But no matter what the circumstance home wins 9 times out of 10 over the theater.

What music do you like?

My musical taste is all over the place. It's probably quicker to just list the genres I don't like, which are country, jazz, and gospel. I can find something I like in just about any other genre except for those. I do primarily tend to lean toward metal though.

What do you read?

Comics. So, so many comics. Far too many to list here. I also read novels, but I'm the world's slowest novel reader. I average about one novel per year.
Last year I read "The Ruins" because I loved the movie so much. I'm currently reading "The Strain" by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro.
Want to start "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" next.

Tell me the first 3 things that come to your mind when you think about Austria (not Australia):

I hate to be "this guy, but the first three things, or people, that come to mind when I think of Austria are Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adolf Hitler, and Sigmund Freud... but not necessarily in that order.

Anything else you wanna tell us?

Just that I'm honored to have been chosen for your horror blog of the month. I've sait it before, but since changing the focus of Tales from the Batcave away from comics and gaming and focusing more on horror and movies, I've met so many great people. As cool as most of the nerds I've met online are, it's the horror nerds that have been the most welcoming, and I'm happy that I've been allowed into the family so to speak.

Thank you, Mitch!

  1. Great interview! Good choice, Maynard! I'm heading over to the Batcave now. I will not, however, drink from the heavy water dispenser used to cool the nuclear pile.

LOL no need to. The Batcave is enjoyable even without drinking from that water dispenser :)

  5. This is actually the first horror blog of the month I haven't herd of before. :)

I enjoyed the interview though I DISAGREE with a capital D about Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake being one of the worst horror movies out there. Not even close. :) My opinion though.

  7. Thanks again for the honor Maynard! And thanks to all for the kind words.

@Nebular...shit man, I meant the "Day of the Dead" remake, not Zack Snyder's Dawn, I actually liked it a good bit. Nothing but a mere oversight on my part there. I'm so used to typing "Dawn" in front of "of the Dead" it just happens without my thinking twice about it.
