"NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST" (Pure Terror 50 Movies Pack, #45)

NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST

German Title:
Das Grauen kam um Mitternacht

USA, 1958
Director: Bernard L. Kowalski

3/10

The Roger-Corman-produced "Night Of The Blood Beast" was the very first sci-fi/horror flick from low-budget filmer Bernard L. Kowalski, also responsible for silly crap like "Attack Of The Giant Leeches" and the pretty nice 70s snakesploitation 'classic' "SSSSSSS".

Although it's only 62 minutes long, it's terribly boring and slow as hell, thanks to Kowalski's lousy direction and Martin Varno's weak script. The story itself is just a shameless rip-off of "The Thing From Another World".
The alien is one of the most ridiculous creatures in movie history and the 'special effects' are just laughable, e.g. the unintentionally hilarious X-ray scene where we get to see the alien embryos inside the astronaut.

Most of the acting is quite solid and I highly enjoyed Alexander Laszlo's cool score - but overall, this is just another forgettable 50s alien-invader movie.

  1. Yeah, its not much of a movie. Kowalski could be an effective director though - he directed the pilot for the original Mission: Impossible! I actually got to meet him, as his son Peter was one of the camera operators on Dawson's Creek, and Bernard and his wife came to visit our set. He was a very nice guy; I mainly quizzed him on M:I, and he told a couple of good stories. Wish this movie had turned out better though.

  2. Yeah, Kowalski's got a quite impressive filmography and he also directed a few terrific Columbo episodes, e.g. Playback & Death Lends A Hand.

Didn't know about his M:I involvment. He even directed 2 more episodes.

You met him, his wife and his son? From now on I'll call you Craig Kowalski ;-)

  3. I disagree totally!! Loved the film a lot. I love any 50's sci-fi film. But to each his own.

  4. I agree completely. This movie is a chore to sit through - though it does have it's humorous moments at times. Incidentally, it's a fine episode of MST3K.

That Pure Terror DVD collection has a lot of crap on it.

  5. Yes, it's only endurable with the guys from MST3K. In fact, I have the boxed set with Night of the Blood Beast on DVD.

  6. I gotta say, blog buddy, I've been silently reading your reviews of all these movies and I admire you! I've never heard of any of them and they all seem pretty terrible, so good on you for having the courage to sit through them all!

Are you grown up in the 50s? I mean, no matter how crappy it is... if it's from the 50s or the 60s, you love it...

Yeah, there are many turds in the box, but also many glorious highlights.
