Call me stupid but I really, really enjoyed "51". It's a funny little sci-fi cheesefest (co-produced by SyFy) in the vein of early-90s rubbish like "Syngenor" or "Metamorphosis", ripping off and parodying countless sci-fi classics like "The Thing" or "Alien".
The acting ranges from ok to amateurish and the characters are all cliché-laden cardboard cut-outs. The dialogue is quite wooden, the soundtrack is terrible and the whole movie looks / feels like a late-90s TV movie.
Aside from that, it's pretty fast-paced and action-packed without ever getting boring. There are even a few surprisingly suspenseful scenes that thrilled me a lot.
Furthermore, we get to see a few excellent-looking alien creatures (creepy carnivores, a cool shapeshifter), fabulous practical effects, lots of pretty gory and brutal kills, and some decent-looking CGI. Oh, and the story itself is pretty entertaining.
A solid After Dark flick and also one of the best SyFy-films I've seen so far.

Sounds interesting - and directed by Junior Connery!
ReplyDeleteI decided to skip this one because it has this "SyFy" label on it. Now, after reading your 'pleased' review, I may reconsider. ;)
ReplyDeleteJust posted my Hunger Games review. I so wanted to like it more than I did.
Have you seen the SyFy Battle of Los Angeles? It was miles better than the real Battle: Los Angeles! haha!
ReplyDelete@Craig:
ReplyDeleteYou may like it, it's a nice little piece of trash, best enjoyed with a few friends and lots of beer :)
@George:
Most SyFy stuff is awful, but this one is definitely an exception.
@Chris:
Not yet, but I want to. It cant be worse than the real Battle :-D
