THE GREY
German Title:
The Grey - Unter Wölfen
USA, 2011
Director: Joe Carnahan
8/10
"The Grey" (produced by Ridley Scott and Tony Scott) is a grim and powerful survival-thriller-drama, a bit similar to the 90s classics "The Edge" and "Alive". Director/writer Joe Carnahan ("The A-Team") fully succeeded in creating an intelligent, tense, emotionally stirring and even philosophical outdoor chiller
Well-acted, well-written and well-paced, the movie is entertaining and thrilling from beginning to end (aside from 2-3 mildly dull scenes). Most of the characters are interesting, believable and likable, and the acting is consistently great, especially "Mr. Badass" Liam Neeson who delivers another amazing leading performance.

The bleak Alaskan wilderness was brilliantly captured by the aspiring cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi whose realistic camera work
is just stunning.
It's packed with impressive-looking (plane crash, exhausted Frank Grillo on the riverside), super-suspenseful (hiding in the woods, canyon wall) and touching scenes (opening, dying victim in the plane), the sinister soundtrack is terrific and most of the monologues/dialogues are plain awesome.
The ending was somewhat pretty disappointing, simply because I didn't got to see Neeson fistfight the shit outta that wolf - at least, the superb short scene after the credits softened that disappointment.

Overall, "The Grey" is a really excellent survival-film not to be missed. I wish they'd make more movies like this nowadays.

I love Liam Neeson and I thought the film was really good. The fact that it ended before the Neeson vs Wolf showdown is the only let down!
ReplyDeleteI am terrified of flying so the plane crash was very hard viewing
K :-)
So glad you enjoyed it. For me, it's one of the best movies of the years so far. The rope scene was the highlight for me, and those wolves were scarier than most horror stuff like zombies, ghosts, creatures etc.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, last night I watched Livid. It's didn't make much sense as it tried to blend too many different genres, but I loved it surreal atmosphere and inventive craziness.
@Karina:
ReplyDeleteYeah, I soooo wanted to see an epic Neeson vs Wolf fight - nevertheless, it's a really awesome movie.
Omg yeah, the plane crash was terrifying.
@Neb:
ReplyDeleteYes, I loved it. It's of course not as uber-amazing as TAKNE, but still it's just one more fuckin' awesome Neeson-flick.
Fuck Statham - Neeson is the best modern 'action star' of this era :)
Pretty excited about Livide, though I guess it's faaaa from being as kick-ass as Inside :)
I must admit I haven't seen Taken, but everyone who has, loved it. :)
ReplyDeleteNope, Inside was better. Having said that, Livid is so different that the comparison between the two films is irrelevant.
I dunno, I thought Martyrs was better than Inside. ;)
You haven't seen Taken? YOU HAVEN'T SEEN TAKEN??? Aaaarrgghh, go watch it! ASAP!! Taken is amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteof course, Martyrs is better... but only a tidbit better :)
ReplyDeleteI've not seen Taken either George, don't feel left out. It's on our Lovefilm list though.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed The Grey, also one of my favourite films this year. What was the post-credit scene? I can't remember that at all. Perhaps it was a day when I had to suddenly leave to catch a train.
Funny story:I literally "chased" this movie.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to see it so badly cuz, let's face it, wolves as killers is pretty interesting, and 2012 isn't exactly the best year for horror flicks in it's first three months until then. So when I found out only one mall was playing it, and it was on a district miles away from mine, I went on to it got caught in traffic, had very little pocket money left only to find myself sitting on it's last screening!
Least all that hassle was worth it!
@Russ:
ReplyDeleteYou haven't seen TAKEN either? You need to... no, you must watch it ASAP!
There are a few seconds where we ge to see Neeson lying on the breathing Alpha wolf.
@Kai:
ReplyDeleteHaha funny story indeed. Well, at least you managed to watch this awesome movie.
