THE DIVIDE

THE DIVIDE

Germany / USA / Canada, 2011
Director: Xavier Gens

4/10

When will certain filmmakers finally learn that a movie needs likable and halfway intelligent characters? My goodness, Xavier Gens' long-awaited post-apocalyptic horror-thriller "The Divide" would have been not that frustrating if there would have been at least one nice and/or smart guy or girl in it - but for whatever reason, the director and the script writers made every character an asshole, a douchebag or a charmless cardborad cut-out.

Apart from a solid Michael Biehn and a badass Michael Eklund, nearly every actor delivers a lame and/or annoying performance (especially the horrible Ivan Gonzalez and an incredibly bland Lauren German).
The whole movie is way too long, there's hardly any tension and the first half is so fucking boring, I almost fell asleep.

Fortunately, the camera work is pretty cool, the music is quite effective, the opening is nice and the whole climax (incl. epilogue) is just awesome - but aside from that, "The Divide" was one huge disappointment.

  1. The music is what mostly disappointed me. I liked it but damn, it felt like that intro song played through the whole freakin flick, until the last ten minutes or so.

  2. As I see we're on the same page when speaking of this movie. I remember I so wanted to see it back in January, but it ended up being a huge let down.

    Really? Strange, I liked the music, was quite moody and atmospheric.

    @George:
    Yeah, I was also pretty excited for it. The trailer looked awesome, but sadly the movie is a letdown :-/

  5. You may enjoy it more than me or George, but I definitely don't recommend it :)

  6. Oh yeah the music was definitely emotional and grasping. I just thought it could have been more diverse. The song through the finale was freaking amazing, though. Kinda had like a Godspeed You Black Emperor feel.

  7. I prefer watching Lord of The Flies, thank you. Least that's more tense than this...

    Haven't seen LOTF in a looooong time but yeah, as far as I remember, it's way better than this.
