LIVIDOriginal Title:
Livide
German Title:
Livid - Das Blut der Ballerinas
France, 2011
Directors: Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury
9/10
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's brutal gore-shocker "Inside" is IMO one of the greatest and cruellest horror movies ever made (revised review soon). Now, 5 years later, the 2 French directors are back with their second movie "Livide", which is obviously not as mindblowing as their debut, but still an absolutely amazing movie.
"Livide" is a mess, but a beautiful and unbelievably enjoyable mess. Parts of the story don't make sense, certain scenes are quite confusing and the ending is weird - nevertheless, I totally loved it. It's tense and thrilling from beginning to end, full of stunningly suspenseful scenes and top notch jump scares, and it has a fantastic atmosphere that strongly reminded me of European genre classics from Pupi Avati, Dario Argento, Amando de Ossorio or Jean Rollin. Just look at the eerie opening credits - total 70s awesomeness.
Camera work and cinematography are fantastic, the brooding soundtrack is terrifically composed, and the editing is simply excellent. There are many creepy-looking locations (nearly everything inside and outside the desolate Gothic mansion) and a shitload of terrifying visuals and things (the old lady with the oxygen mask, the mechanical animals, the mirror room, the vampire ballerina, the levitating house etc.).
I also loved all the wonderful references to great horror classics like "Suspiria" (certificate from the Tanzakademie Freiburg), "Halloween III" (the Silver Shamrock masks), or "An American Werewolf In London" (a pub sign whick looks very similar to The Slaughtered Lamb), and all the nods to their previous movie (Béatrice Dalle cameo, the scissors...).

Have a SUPER week!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful quirky artsy mess would describe Livid perfectly. I liked it, but it could have been better. The atmosphere was great.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your Sleep Tight review, Harry. :)
I love that cover. You sure know how to make me want to watch a movie. ;)

Sleep Tight review end of the week!
@Jen:
Haha yeah, Maynard knows best :)
Sounds good -adding it to the To Watch list!
ReplyDeleteCraig, you'll love it!!
ReplyDeleteI quite enjoyed this as well. Not quite the extreme shocker I was expecting but still a very inventive and effective work.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's pretty much the exact opposite of INSIDE. I love it! :)
DeleteIs there anyone who can tell me why the german BD is listed as 95 minutes, while the m6 french release is 88? IMDB has the runtime listed as 88... Is that a cut version? Or is there more to this? Thanks to anyone who answers in advance!
ReplyDeleteI guess someone messed it up, or maybe it has something to do with the PAL format. Nevermind. I bought the German DVD a week ago: it's 89 minutes and it's perfectly uncut.
DeleteHope this helps!
It does! Thanks alot! My german is weak, but the M6 release is said to be Region free, with english subs. I was hoping to import that one. Costing me around $40 USD. Not that I have a problem with that, but I don't do censorship well. So, I'm guessing that the PAL format must be the reason for the differing runtimes, leaving the 88min m6 release uncut as well? Thanks for your help Maynard!
DeleteYou're welcome!
Deletebtw, in August a Region 2 version will be released in the UK. You can already preorder it on amazon.co.uk

Don't know about the m6 release, but I guess it's uncut too.
Here's some guy talking about the m6 BluRay:

I've noticed that. I resort to the UK when I need to, but I'm always nervous. They get scissor happy with edits over there. ^_^ - I think I'll be going with the M6 release. They seemed happy with the quality of the disc in that forum you linked. My concern comes from another form in which they say how the German relesae is uncut with a runtime of 95 minutes. I'm not sure how the differing formats effect the run time, all I know is if I can find a uncut BD, I'm happy. So, again, thank you very much!
