Project Terrible: FRANKENSTEIN 2000

Yes, ladies and gentlemen,
Mondo Bizarro's mighty, mighty "PROJECT TERRIBLE" is back, bitches! Worse and more terrible than ever! :-)

Huge thanks to Mondo who gave me this hilariously bad piece of Italo-rubbish. Mary W. Shelley would turn in her grave =D

FRANKENSTEIN 2000

Original Titles:
Ritorno dalla morte / Il ritorno dalla morte - Frankenstein 2000

Alternate Title:
Return From Death: Frankenstein 2000

Italy, 1991
Director: Joe D'Amato (as David Hills)

2/10

There was a time (late 70s, early 80s) when Joe D'Amato was in his right mind and created a few fabulous Italo-gore-classics ("Buio Omega", "Anthropophagus", "Absurd") - yet, by the late 80s / early 90s he completely lost his mind and created schlockfest after schlockfest.
Stunningly crappy movies like "Quest For The Mighty Sword", "Killing Birds", "Contamination .7" or this one here: "FRANKENSTEIN 2000", a cheap, lousy, stupid and very, VERY loose adaptation of the Frankenstein story.

The monster is actually French veteran actor Donald O'Brien, star in countless western, horror and exploitation movies between the 60s and 90s. He looks awful as zombie, but it's pretty funny watching him limping around, killing off bad guys.

The movie's only 'good' gore scene: Donald O'Brien crushing the head of some stupid surgeon.

For whatever reason, the movie was shot in some ugly rural town in Lower Austria.

Some weird and pointless Nazisploitation. Yes, the name of the Disco here is "Heil"...

"Frankenstein 2000" is a terrible movie, badly written and directed, awfully shot and edited. It's boring and tedious, the plot sucks, and it's packed with laughable actors. The settings look cheap, the effects look ridiculous and the score is dull and repetitive.
Apart from some nice gore and O'Brien's performance, everything about this stinker sucks.

    1. Stinky indeed; a typically shitty early 90s Italo-crap.

  2. Maynard, is it really terrible that your post really made me want to see this movie? LOL There's just something so compelling about horribly made movies. ;-)

    1. Haha, I totally understand you. I love watching terrible movies, just because... well, sometimes you need to see something really terrible, so you can appreciate the good stuff even more :)

  3. Well really, what else can you expect from D'Amato. I've slowly been making my way through all 200 of D'Amato films and I don't think he was a director that was ever in his right mind - but he was a great guy.

    1. I still have hope that there is at least one great D'Amato movie out there. He mostly did crap, but the 3 above-mentioned movies are masterpieces of Italian horror cinema.

    2. When I find a D'Amato film worthy of praise I'll let you know.

    3. Check out ANTHROPOPHAGUS, ABSURD and BUIO OMEGA, 3 breathtaking Italo-classics. I gave them all a 8/10.

  4. To be honest, I was going to give you 'Frankenstein '80,' but you already reviewed it. Sadly for you, 'Frankenstein '90' was not available either.

Joe D'Amato- always good for torturing people.

    1. Omg, don't remind me of Frankenstein '80 - what a stinker :)

Yeah, he made lots of Project-Terrible-worthy stuff :D

  5. I know this movie is probably gonna be awful, but thanks for making me aware that D'Amato made a Frankenstein movie starring Donald O'Brien. I shall watch this for science.

    1. O'Brien is probably the only good thing about it. I mean, he looks silly but his performance is neat.

  6. Looks like I am the 'stupid surgeon' , cast as Dr Frankenstein, having had to wear the clay cast head so that Donald O'Brian was able to squeeze the eyes out..the film was done in 1992 as I remember! Will alwaysremember A. Massacesi aka Joe D'Amato for his kindness and strength of character.
