"Windows" is a very weird and underwhelming psychological thriller-drama, a bit in the vein of Carpenter's "Someone's Watching Me", and it's the only directorial effort by oscar-nominated cinematographer Gordon Willis ("The Godfather 1 & 2", "Annie Hall", "Zelig").
"Windows" revolves around an insane Lesbian (Elizabeth Ashley) who tries to destroy the life of her friend (Talia Shire) whom she's completely obsessed with. The basic plot is interesting, but due to an unimaginative script, the shiftless direction and some implausible character development, it never gets off the ground and completely fails to thrill or excite.
The acting is decent, but nothing special, Ennio Morricone's score is surprisingly unimpressing, and the pacing is way too slow, way too tedious, though it gladly didn't bore the fuck outta me, thanks to the incredibly beautiful photography and loads of amazing shots of 1980 New York which kept me glued to the screen.
Other "highlights": the unsettling opening rape and the scene with the frozen cat which made me giggle.

I thought it was a good pick because it has a terrible reputation. I liked the photography too, but it was like an absurd erotic thriller drawn out to where it didn't work on a basic level. It's certainly a different kind of so-called bad movie, rather than the usual crap camcorder zombie movie. :)
ReplyDeleteWindows is totally absurd but somehow I enjoyed it, though I wouldn't watch it a second time..
DeleteA bad movie? Not really, more of a failed movie :)
I have always kinda wanted to see this one - and because it was released in 1980 - I still do!
