EXCISION [/SLASH Filmfestival 2012]

EXCISION

USA, 2012
Director: Richard Bates Jr.

9/10

Believe it or not - this is a movie that CAN keep up to all the expectations the trailer has set (doesn't happen that often these days): "Excision", the super-brilliant and highly impressive debut feature of youngster Richard Bates Jr. who successfully managed to create a wild and macabre blend of body-horror and coming-of-age-drama, very critical on the American way of life, entertaining and amusing, but also unsettling and quite disturbing.
As if David Cronenberg and Michael Moore mixed "May", "Ginger Snaps", "American Beauty" and "Carrie" together into one massive bastard of a movie.

Right from the get go, "Excision" sucks you in and completely mesmerizes you with its strong atmosphere, the underlying and strangely fascinating tension between the characters, and a huge amount of captivating visuals, cool colours and mindblowing images (stunning slow-motion, bizarre and super-gory dreams/visions, awesome shots/angles...) - plus: one of this year's creepiest and most shocking endings.

Script and direction are excellent, editing and cinematography are amazing, and, as you can guess, the cast is absolutely superb: AnnaLynne McCord ("Day Of The Dead 2008") as delusional, disturbed and ptitful, but bizarrely sexy teenage outcast, Traci Lords ("Blade") as hardcore-religious mother, Ariel Winter ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang") as terminally ill daughter, Roger Bart ("Hostel 2") as inept father, John Waters ("Hairspray") as weird priest and Ray Wise ("Dead End")
as hilarious principal.

Believe the hype: "Excision" is a miracle of a movie, and it will (probably) leave you as speechless as it did me.
