My frequent readers probably know that I love movies that turn me into an emotional wreck, movies that knock me out of my seat and blow me away. Well, believe it or not... "Psalm 21" is such a movie. I totally didn't expect that. I thought this is some neat little Swedish ghost-flick, maybe something in the vein of the underrated "Hidden (2009)" - far, FAR from it!

"Psalm 21" is an intense, thought-provoking and surprisingly nihilistic horror movie about faith and religion, heaven and hell, love and hate, family secrets, child abuse, atheism, apostasy and massive criticism of the catholic church. It's bizarre, but stunningly fascinating, completely intriguing and way more unique than it looks like.

From beginning to end, the movie is fabulously thrilling and highly suspenseful, full of super-creepy scenes, uncanny dream sequences, haunting images, frightening faces and shocking jump-scares. There's lots of creepy-looking locations (barn, church, dark forests) and the general atmosphere is frightening.

The storyline is fascinating and so full of unpredictable twists and turns, it made my brain turn into a pretzel. The direction is tight and the script is awesome. Cinematography and lighting are top notch, the soundtrack is brilliant and the CGI effects all look really good, especially considering the movie's low budget
(about $100.000).

Best of all: the excellent acting, especially the absolutely outstanding performances of Jonas Malmsjö and Björn Bengtsson, and the offensive final speech which is so incredibly powerful, I was shivering when the ending credits started rolling.

To some extent, I understand why "Psalm 21" got so many bad and negative reviews. It's surely a strange movie, not made for everyone... but it seems as if it was made exactly for me :-)
