In terms of Horror, 2014 wasn't awesome as 2013. Too many underwhelming sequels and remakes. Too much unimaginative low-budget dreck. Too many over-hyped oh-so-original films that weren't original and didn't deliver at all.
However, there was still enough good stuff to find, maybe not in regular theaters or multiplexes, but definitely on festivals, in arthouse cinemas and on VOD-sites. Here's #30 - #16 of my Top 30 Horror / Horror-Related Movies 2014.

Maynard's Top 30
Best Horror / Horror-Related Movies 2014
Part 1: #16 - #30
Superbly written and very well developed Italian ghost tale full of gorgeous images, stunning-looking landscapes and super-creepy dream sequences. Best Italian horror movie in years (aside from last year's underrated "The Haunting of Helena").
Annoyed and unnerved by thousands of CGI sharks, snakes and crocs? Then this is THE movie for you, a demented and super-bonkers piece of silly practical-puppet-effects extravaganza. Take that, SyFy & The Asylum. Best creature feature of 2014!
BURYING THE EX
Far from being revolutionary or groundbreaking, but undoubtedly Sante Dante's best film since the late 90s. A simple but wonderfully amusing horror-comedy, packed with funny puns and top-notch acting performances. Best Zom-Com of 2014!
Chile / USA, 2013
One of the unexpectedly weirdest and most bizarre films of this year, with a stellar cast that stumbles through a strange teen-drama that eventually transforms into a sinister and unsettling psychological horror trip. A massive surprise, wow!
BLOOD WAS EVERYWHERE
The absolute greatest slasher movie of 2014 inculding one of the most impressive, most fascinating killers since Elijah Wood in "Maniac". Uncompromosing and merciless inde cinema, as if Michael Haneke and Simon Rumley made a grimy non-college remake of "Final Exam".
THERAPY FOR A VAMPIRE
Original Title: Der Vampir auf der Couch
Austria / Switzerland, 2014
Second-best vampire comedy of 2014. A highly entertaining and pleasantly amusing flick that delivers the goods with uniquely quirky humor, splendid acting, marvellous camera work and terrific editing + excellent cast. One of the best Austrian horror-related film in years!
Jonas Alexander Arnby's
WHEN ANIMALS DREAM
Original Title: Når dyrene drømmer
Second-best werewolf-themed film of 2014. Intriguing Danish arthouse-horror that combines elements of "Let The Right One In" with the coming-of-age theme of "Ginger Snaps", which eventually results in a gripping and fascinating lycanthropy-chiller.
Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani's
THE STRANGE COLOUR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS
Original Title: L'etrange Couleur des Larmes de ton Corps
Belgium / France / Luxembourg, 2014
No-one makes movie like Cattet and Forzani do. No-one. An experimental piece of art, as odd and mystifying as its overlong title. As if David Lynch and a young Dario Argento tried (and succeeded) to combine the cinematic universes of Hitchcock and Kubrick. Third-best Giallo-themed film I've seen in 2014!
DELIVER US FROM EVIL
Not as great as Scott Derrickson's previous shocker "Sinister", but still way, way better, scarier and more suspenseful than all of his pre-"Sinister" works. Visually stunning and excellently scripted, like a religious-themed horror sequel to "Se7en". Best exorcism-themed horror film in years!
AMONG THE LIVING
Original Title: Aux Yeux des Vivants
Not as fascinating as Maury & Bustillo's previous films ("Inside" & "Livid"), but still another piece of French quality horror, full of nods and references to American horror films of the 70s ("The Funhouse", "The Hills Have Eyes") and coming-of-age classics of the 80s ("The Goonies", "Stand By Me").
Adrían García Bogliano's
Unique, fresh and unpredictable piece of old-school lycanthropy awesomeness, radically different from Bogliano's 2013 masterpiece "Here Comes The Devil". Fantastic practical effects, hilarious humor and a mindblowing performance by the great Nick Damici. Best werewolf-themed film of 2014!
A simple but bloody great storyline, combined with a couple of highly sympathetic characters, some really eerie rural locations and shitloads of super-scary shocks + most amazing WTF-ending in a very long time, mindblowing. Second-best found-footage film of 2014!
ABCs OF DEATH 2
USA / New Zealand, 2014
26 more A-Z segments about death, made by shitloads of genre directors from all over the world. Surprisingly as entertaining and badass as the first part. From funny to brutal, from amusing to shocking, from light-hearted to mind-fucking. The perfect party film!
BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO
A horrifying and mesmerising, dazzling and overwhelming trip into cinematic madness. Incredible how Peter Strickland managed to mash up the visual gloriousness of Mario Bava with the nightmarish world of Franz Kafka and the enigmatic universe of David Lynch. Second-best Giallo-themed film in 2014!
Believe the hype: "The Babadook" is as great as everyone claims, an unbelievably frightening scarefest that will give you sleepless nights, thanks to the eponymous creature, the movie's overall somber tone and the scarily awesome award-worthy performance by Essie Davis. Best Australian horror film in years!
