Veteran actress BETSY PALMER has died at the age of 88 in a hospice care center near her home in Connecticut.
Palmer is undoubtedly best known for her role as PAMELA VOORHEES, the delusional teenager-killer in the cult-classic "Friday the 13th" (1980) and mother of JASON VOORHEES who continued the killing in 9 sequels (1981-2001),
an "Elm Street" crossover (2003) and a remake (2009). [Note: she also had a cameo in "Friday the 13th Part 2" (1981)].
Although this was the role that made her famous, especially among horror buffs, it's amusing that she originally hated the role and only took the part because she needed a new car (a Volkswagen Scirocco): "I said, 'Send me the script.' They sent it over and I read it. And I said, 'What a piece of shit! Nobody is ever going to see this thing. What an awful thing this is.' It was only 10 days work, so I thought, 'I'll do it so I can get my car'."
Although she mostly acted in non-horror TV-series throughout her 6-decades-career ("Columbo", "T.J. Hooker", "Knots Landing", "The Love Boat", "CHiPs", "Murder, She Wrote", "Studio One"...), she did at least a three more horror films: "The Fear: Resurrection" (1999), "Penny Dreadful" (2005) and "Bell Witch: The Movie" (2007).
Rest in Peace, Betsy Palmer
